The Myth of Overpopulation in the Twenty-first Century: Population Growth, Resource Distribution, and the Global Sustainability Debate
Abstract
The debate surrounding overpopulation remains central to contemporary discussions on environmental sustainability, climate change, and global development. Traditional perspectives frequently identify rapid population growth as the primary cause of environmental degradation, food insecurity, resource scarcity, and ecological instability. Emerging scholarly evidence increasingly challenges this assumption by emphasizing the roles of consumption inequality, industrialization, governance systems, and unequal resource distribution in shaping sustainability outcomes. This systematic review examined the relationship between population growth, resource distribution, and the global sustainability debate in the twenty-first-century. The study synthesized evidence from 34 peer-reviewed studies published between 2020 and 2025 using a systematic review methodology guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework. Relevant studies were retrieved from major academic databases and analyzed through thematic narrative synthesis. The findings revealed that sustainability challenges are multidimensional and cannot be explained solely through demographic growth. The review established that affluent populations and industrialized economies contribute disproportionately to carbon emissions, ecological degradation, and excessive resource consumption despite relatively slower population growth rates. The findings also demonstrated that governance quality, urban planning, technological innovation, and equitable resource distribution significantly influence environmental sustainability outcomes. Studies on demographic transition further indicated that fertility decline is closely associated with education, health care access, urbanization, and socioeconomic development. The review concludes that the traditional overpopulation narrative oversimplifies contemporary sustainability challenges by overlooking structural economic inequalities and unsustainable production systems. The study recommends integrated sustainability strategies focusing on climate justice, responsible consumption, environmental governance, and equitable development as more effective pathways toward long-term global sustainability.
