The Role of Conflict Resolution in Strengthening Church Unity in Ghana
Abstract
Conflict resolution plays a critical role in fostering unity within churches, particularly in diverse and dynamic contexts such as Ghana. This study explores the causes of conflicts, evaluates the strategies employed to resolve them, and examines their impact on church unity. Using a systematic review methodology, the study synthesizes findings from 15 scholarly works and highlights key factors contributing to conflicts, including leadership disputes, doctrinal disagreements, financial mismanagement, and cultural or generational differences. The analysis reveals that effective conflict resolution strategies, such as mediation, negotiation, and the application of Biblical principles, significantly enhance church harmony. Furthermore, the integration of culturally sensitive approaches and leadership training programs has proven instrumental in addressing conflicts in multi-ethnic congregations. The study also underscores the pivotal role of spiritual practices, such as prayer and reconciliation, which, when combined with practical measures like financial transparency, foster forgiveness and trust among members. The findings demonstrate that resolving conflicts leads to increased membership retention, strengthens trust in leadership, and improves inclusivity, contributing to broader social cohesion. However, gaps such as inadequate training for church leaders, the absence of formal resolution frameworks, and the exclusion of youth from conflict processes remain critical challenges. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on church conflict resolution by offering actionable recommendations for enhancing unity within Ghanaian churches. It emphasizes the need for holistic, context-sensitive approaches that integrate spiritual and practical strategies, ultimately supporting the church's role as an agent of peace and reconciliation in society.
